The Office (US) S2 E16 - 'Valentine's Day' Mini-Review

Scranton on Acid.

The Office (US) combines humour and drama to create a winning episode in 'Valentine's Day', the best entry in season 2 so far. Michael causes chaos by revealing he hooked up with Jan in a board meeting, leading to hilariously awkward moments and a cute conclusion to Michale and Jan's story in this episode. That ending threw a real spanner in the works, as it seemed the show was content to just let Jan and Michael die. Back in the Office, it was a very funny saga watching Phyllis receive gifts whilst the other girls grew jealous. Dwight and Angela took another step forwards in their relationship too, as they moved in together in a cute segment. Overall, this episode delivered on every level and is undoubtedly the best episode of The Office (US) I have watched so far.

BEST MOMENTS

  • "her words not mine"
  • "The city of love"
  • Dwight being so gassed about his bobble head!
  • Just wanted to shout out Sbarro pizza in this episode! Ate it every day when I visited Vegas for my 21st, no regrets.
  • Ryan and Kelly have hooked up, and it seems the former regrets it already
  • "There's a guy pooping down there"
  • The fake Tina Fey
  • "Holy God" - Pam
  • "Man that thing's bigger than I am" "no it's not"
  • "she's kind of..." "tightly wound?" "Exactly!"
  • "Maybe because she's my girlfriend"
  • "I would be so psyched if we just dated forever"
  • Meredith passing out drunk at her desk was great
DID YOU KNOW?!*
  • Most of the street scenes in New York City were improvised
  • First appearance of writers/producers Lee Eisenberg and Gene Stupnitsky as Gino and Leo, respectively, employees of Vance Refrigeration. They deliver the giant bear to Phyllis
  • Charles Esten appears in this episode as Stamford Branch manager Josh Porter. Charles (also known as Chip) used to be a regular cast member on the popular improv comedy show Whose Line Is It Anyway?, which is one of Michael Scott's favorite TV shows
  • First appearance of David Wallace
  • When Michael thinks he spots Tina Fey outside 30 Rock, he fails to notice Conan O'Brien walking by. Conan is an old friend of series producer Greg Daniels, having worked together as writers on Not Necessarily the News and The Simpsons, and was a friend of the show. At the 2006 Emmy Awards, Conan is the one who announced that "The Office" had won Outstanding Comedy Series (for its second season) and his delight is apparent
  • This is the first and only time we see Pam wearing her hair down until season 3 episode 6 'Diwali.'
  • Michael goes to New York on a business trip and thinks he spots Tina Fey outside 30 Rockefeller Plaza. According to producer Greg Daniels, the bit about Tina Fey was based on the fact that people thought all dark-haired women with glasses near Rockefeller Center were Tina Fey. Tina Fey and Steve Carell later went on to appear together on a movie called Date Night
  • At the end of Michael's financial presentation where he does a movie-of-sorts of his office staff, we can see the pictures of Robin Williams and Steve Martin together at the end
RATING: 9/10
