The Office (US) S3 E1 - 'Gay Witch Hunt' Mini-Review

Gay, Good.

Michael finds himself in hot water when his inappropriate antics force Oscar to come out to his colleagues. The fallout is The Office (US) at its cringe-inducing best, as poor Oscar is subjected to Michael's attempts to make him feel more comfortable. There are problematic homophobic elements littered throughout the episode, however one can argue that this is representative of that aspect of society which lingers to this day. The humour manages to stand out nonetheless, as season 3 begins strongly. It's fun seeing Jim in a new environment as well, particularly one featuring Rashida Jones (one of my strongest celebrity crushes). Hopefully this change of scenery will allow the show to remain new and fresh as it enters its third rendition. The final big reveal in this premier was that Roy and Pam have broken up off-screen! Pam, it seems, has finally realised how awful that relationship was. Now the stage is set for Jim and Pam to reunite.

BEST MOMENTS

  • Ryan no longer a temp!
  • "False. I do not miss him"
  • "You don't call retarded people retards"
  • Oscar coming out on camera was an awesome moment
  • "Big Tuna"
  • Dwight grinning at the thought of Angela with another woman was hilarious
  • "Jim told me you could buy gaydar online"
  • Pam and Roy have broken up! Weird that it happened off-screen but still satisfying aha
  • Stanley and his toasters haha
  • "Gay Shame Festival"
  • Creed - "It's possible a man slipped in"
  • "torrid, unabashed monkey sex"
  • "See, everybody has a chance!"
  • "Of course, we all thought you were gay in high school"
  • "Gay, good"
  • "At least we put this matter to bed... that's what she said. Or he said"
  • "Sometimes it pays to be gay" - what a final line from Oscar haha
  • The 'gaydar' going off on Dwight whilst he's using it
DID YOU KNOW?!*
  • 'Gay Witch Hunt'  won an Emmy Award for Outstanding Writing for a Comedy Series
  • The exterior shot of the Stamford Branch was formerly the office location for the company Starwood, and is directly across the water from NBC Sports in Stamford, CT. NBC is the network that aired The Office
  • The kiss between Michael and Oscar in the conference room was not scripted. The scene had been shot a couple of times with Steve Carell not kissing Oscar Nuñez. Then on one take, Oscar saw "[Carell's] lips coming closer and closer". Nuñez recalled "I'm like, 'Dear God, he's going to kiss me.' And sure enough, he planted one on my face." The other cast members were laughing during the kiss but because the camera stay focused on Carell and Nuñez, the scene was still usable
RATING: 8.6/10
