RandomReview - Looper (2012)

Back to the Future-Past The premise of Rian Johnson's 2012 sci-fi thriller is an intriguing one. A narrative setting is crafted such to create a question that the director poses to the audience - could you kill your future self? The world Johnson creates is important to focus on here however, as it is a brilliantly original concept and the futuristic depiction of 2044 America is subtle in such a way that it feels natural, rather than forcing its way into your face to emphasise its time period. The weapons and technology look almost rustic despite how advanced they are, adding a layer of authenticity to the universe created here. Thankfully, this beautiful depiction is reinforced by a story that is at the same time mind bending and grounded - it plays with concepts of time travel in a way that is challenging but not impossible to come to terms with. Creating this sense of realism is vital in allowing the audience to embrace the story being told. Generally, the film follows a ...

**EDITORS NOTE** - This post was written on 03/11/18, thus is not completely up-to-date, however I would like to publish it as it never made it into the Redbrick newspaper and I spent much time on the short article ***UPDATE*** - This post is now available to see on the Redbrick website! Check it out if you get a chance. ------------------------------------------- ON 11 th  July, England’s exciting World Cup campaign came to an end in their 1-2 semi-final defeat to Croatia. After a journey which revived public adoration towards the national team, Gareth Southgate faced a difficult challenge as the competition winded down and normality resumed – could England build upon the success of Russia 2018? The Three Lions were brought crashing down to Earth with a 2-1 defeat in their debut Nations League fixture against Spain in September. This narrow loss, whilst sobering, showed much promise for a team heavily criticised for being unable to produce performances against the ‘top ...

Solo: A Star Wars Story - Film Review

Image
A long time ago in a galaxy far far away... ...in an lost era known to us as 1977, audiences were introduced for the first time to an outlaw by the name of Han Solo - a rugged, smooth-talking smuggler who swaggered his way into fan's hearts across the world. Now 41 years, 3 film appearances and 1 new actor later, he finally has his own big-screen epic, and it certainly doesn't disappoint. From the start,  Solo: A Star Wars Story  is overflowing with references and call-backs to Han's backstory as fleshed out by Harrison Ford four decades before. From the formation of the galaxies greatest friendship in Han and Chewie, to the depiction of the infamous Kessel Run, director Ron Howard pulls out all the stops as he tells the incredible story of our favourite smuggler. The plot is great, if a bit straight-forward. Han's journey from a pick-pocket on the streets of Correllia, to a foot soldier in the rampant army of the Empire, to his eventual rise to talented pilot-smug...

Mallory Knox UK Tour - Birmingham

Mallory Knox UK Tour - Birmingham So I honestly don't know where to start with this page, so figured why not talk about my life. First stop - music. So I've been a big fan of 'melodic punk' since I first came across Mallory Knox in Year 10 of secondary school. Honestly, back then I was still trying to figure out what kind of music I was even into, y'know it was one of those periods where you're just very confused so I was listening to all sorts of crap. It was only when I came across a track called 'When are we waking up' from a band by the name of Mallory Knox that I realised this was a sound i actually rated highly. Following this, I started to explore their (at the time) latest released album, 'Asymmetry', and found other songs I loved such as 'Getaway', 'Shout at the Moon' and 'Ghost in the Mirror'. For me, this really kicked off my interest in the genre and I went on to spend the next year creating ...

Eventually I'll find my niche and can make this site more specific.. I hope? Time will tell. Until then, thanks for reading and hope you support this random randomness ✌ ~ JD
